I came to know about Coco Island in Velachery, Chennai from Katie Nathan of Chennai Focus. Coco Island is a small café with seating for about 5 to 10 people but it serves some really good juices and smoothies, all focused around tender coconut. I have made 2 visits to this place so far, recent one last weekend. As I have a liking for tender coconut, I like the drinks on offer at Coco island. Through this post, I am hoping to give some visibility to them.Their items are very reasonably priced. This large cup of Coco Chikkoo- a drink made by mixing sapota (Chikkoo) and tender coconut water, is priced at Rs 80. Smaller quantity one is available at Rs 50. But unless you explicitly ask for small...

There’re a few who travel a lot and others wonder how these people get money to travel. From what I have observed, those who love to travel aren’t necessarily super rich with unlimited income. They primarily prioritize travel over other luxuries in life. Of course, there’re a small percentage of travelers who have a great financial backing thanks to well earning spouse or rich parents or family business and another small percentage manage to travel around with sponsorship from brands that cover their expenses. But not every traveler is that fortunate to fall under these categories and often travel with their own money. Assuming you’re interested in travel but wondering how to save mo...

Four to five years ago, action camera like GoPro were a rare breed. Very few people had them. When I was researching for a wide angle lens, it appeared to me that a GoPro would be a better alternative and I bought aHero 3 that cost me close to 40000 INR including shipping, customs etc. Not many had action cameras back then so I would get lots of questions about GoPro from strangers and friends alike. That has changed now. Almost everyone now owns an action camera, along with a DSLR. GoPro or its cheaper competition brands.Drone being used in a pre-wedding shootSelfies and action camera footage no longer excite people. Current trend is Drones. These flying cameras can take captivating photos ...

This post shares my stay experience at Native Place,  Nirvana Adventure's basecamp in Kamshet. A detailed FAQs about Native Place has already been covered in this earlier post.Native House complex includes a main building that has two floors and a terrace, and an additional building that houses about 4 private rooms. Check their website for details. Terrace has a motion detecting light system which switches on when someone is passing and switches off thereafter. My stay was in a Non AC dorm. Thanks to lots of trees in the campus, fan was just fine, didn't feel need for AC. Guests are required to bring their own towels and toiletries. If you've paid for a paragliding course, dorm accommod...

If you’ve been visiting Youtube often, you might have noticed lots of web series of late. Web Series are medium length stories told over a series of episodes all published online (Youtube). For many emerging talents/production houses, web series are easy way out to put their creativity online. Traditionally they had to depend on television channels to accept them, give them time slot etc. But with online consumption ever increasing, it is lot easier to put your video on youtube, to an unlimited possibility of viewership and monetization.Advantages of web series over a television broadcastingViewers can watch from anywhere, anytime at their convenience, not having to depend on a channel or ...

I recently enjoyed reading a book titled "Let's have coffee" by Parul Mittal. This post is a quick review of the book. This is Parul's second book. 5 years ago I had reviewed her first book, Arranged Love.Let's Have Coffee is written from a perspective of a girl who is wedding planner by profession and is in search a perfect man for herself. She has her sight on a prospect but a series of developments derail the prospects. The plot unfolds with events after event which sometimes brings them closer, sometimes causes a drift. For a change, the lead character Meha isn't positioned as the most beautiful girl. Feels more realistic with various ups n downs of life. Narrated from a girl's point of v...

Reunification Palace, also known as Independence Palace is one of the important buildings in Ho Chi Min City in Vietnam.  The palace has its origin in mid 19th century, during French colonization of Vietnam. Since then, the palace has been destroyed partially during various wars and rebuilt. The complete history is available on Wikipedia. My post focuses on sharing photos and observations of the current day Reunification Palace, as accessible to the tourists. There is an entry fee of 40000 VND (INR 120 approx) for visiors. When in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh city, you can explore most of city’s attractions on foot. There’s no real need for renting a cab or taking a city tour package. Most of the places of interest are within 1-2 kms apart. You can simply walk in between enjoying the scenery/green cover, than having to depend on a tour bus or spending money on taxi that gets held up in traffic. In this post I am listing 10 most important places of tourist interest in Ho Chi Minh city and a sequence of visiting them, so that within a total walking distance of about 6 kms, you can explore all these 10 attractions. Of course you can customize this to suit your needs and interests- like if your hotel is closer to one...

Almost every Indian who has a passport and has travelled abroad has done at least one trip to Thailand, as it is closer, cheaper n easier to visit. But not many have visited Vietnam, mainly because Vietnam tourism hasn’t marketed itself much in India and there’re no direct flights between India and Vietnam. Thailand and Vietnam are adjacent countries, having similar geographies, terrain and climate. So what’s unique about Vietnam compared to Thailand? Is it adequate if you’ve visited Thailand or should you take extra effort to visit Vietnam? Having visited Vietnam recently and having been to Thailand multiple times, I am trying to give you a comparison of both countries, from the per...

Audi has introduced 3 new sedans, from its A5 series. These include the A5 Sportsback, S5 Sportsback and A5 Cabriolet (convertible). Together they are called Brat Pack, because Audi thinks just like the aggressive spoilt kids who care for nothing and demand attention, these new Audi sedans pack more punch, features and stand out from other sedans in their class. The Audi A5 BratPack was unveiled in Chennai today at Crowne Plaza hotel in front of select media personnel and guests. I was invited for the same and went there as it was a Sunday. As I entered the venue one car was already exposed and standing out there in bright red while the other was covered. The third one was missing.Subsequentl...

When Renault India introduced Duster in 2012, it proved to be an instant success. The concept of Compact SUVs were new back then and customers readily accepted Duster as it was rugged, powerful, offered much more than a sedan or premium hatch, while not costing too much as a full grown SUV. Duster success gave Renault the much needed boost, as no other model in their stable was doing any good. However this supremacy of Reno Duster that lasted for about an year was soon challenged by Ford Ecosport, a compact SUV which was sub 4 meters and was couple of lakhs cheaper compared to duster. Soon the market is flooded with more n more models- Vitara Brezza, BR-V, Hyundai Creta, Tata Nexon and so on...

Puppet shows are popular in India and various parts of the world- stories told via dolls whose movements are controlled by an operator behind the scene. In Vietnam, a variation of this puppet show, known as water puppet show are popular. On one of the evenings, as our day tour ended at around 7 PM, I figured out that I will be able to make it to the evening Puppet show. Checked on Google, it suggested last show at 9.30 PM on Sunday. But as I walked to the counter, there was only 1 show at 8 PM. I bought a ticket (Each ticket cost 100000 VND or about USD 5, cheaper on weekdays I guess). I was asked to report 10 minutes before the show time. With about 45 minutes to spare I went off to explore...

I rode the new TVS Apache RTR200 for 3 days/730 kms recently. This post is a review of this new bike, based on this usage experience. I do not own it, but rented it from Royal Brothers. TVS Apache RTR200 4V was launched early last year, but I haven’t noticed TVS marketing this bike aggressively. Even when I visited TVS showrooms to service by RTR160, they didn’t have a stock of RTR200 RV. Obviously there’re very few Apache RTR200 on the roads compared to its direct competition- Pulsar 200 NS/AS/CS. This is supposed to be TVS’s flagship model, so not sure if it isn’t given the attention and marketing budget it deserves. What are the improvements in RTR200 compared to RTR160/180?RTR 2...

M16 assault rifles are US Army’s preferred primary weapon. They are much lighter, more accurate, less recoil and much faster compared to Russia made AK-47s. M16 s were naturally weapon of choice for US Soldiers fighting in Vietnam. However good they were in theory, when put to use in Vietnam, M16s didn’t perform as expected. Despite having various advantages and superiority over AK-47 on paper, M16s couldn’t work well when exposed to rain, mud, slush and other natural elements the soldiers had to battle in Vietnam, in addition to the enemy. AK-47s were used extensively by Vietnam soldiers- though AK-47 had various disadvantages compared to M16, it worked well without jamming or failing...

Not many Indians visit Vietnam compared to Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore. May be because Vietnam Tourism is not aggressively promoted in India and there're no direct flights. I recently returned from my first visit to Vietnam and my Vietnam trip was better than expected. I had not done great deal of research before the trip- only few hotel bookings and some minimum reading on what all can be done in Vietnam. Rest of the things I planned it on the go. I did a few mistakes and learnt lots of things about Vietnam in this trip. I am summarizing my findings in this post, so that when you plan your trip to Vietnam, you can plan better, making the most of your time and money.1. Flight booking:&nb...

Bitexco Financial tower is the tallest building in Ho Chi Minh city, second tallest in Vietnam. This building is locally known as Saigon (former name for Ho Chi Minh city) Skydeck. The tower is 263 meters tall and has 68 floors, mostly office space. The 49th floor is open to visitors, who can see a view of the city in all directions. Saigon Skydeck is the first place I visited upon arriving in Ho Chi Minh city.Next 4 photos show the view of Ho Chi Minh city from the skydeckThe green open space you see next to the river (which is called Sigon river) is being set aside to develop a central business district. Lots of office complexes, few hotels and residence projects will come up here. View on...

As I am touring Vietnam, I visited he Cu Chi tunnels yesterday. During the trip I learnt about the impact of a war time phenomenon, known as Agent Orange. Agent Orange is a toxic chemical (herbicide and defoliant - makes plants shed leaves and even kill them) US army sprayed over Vietnam - not a small area- over 31000 square kilometers or 10% of Vietnam's total geography. Effect of this action sustains even today, some 44 years after the war has ended. Somehow the Agent Orange phenomenon never got world attention, to the extent say nuclear bombs in Japan got. In this post I am explaining the details of Agent Orange issue during Vietnam war, as I saw and learnt about it in Vietnam.Above: A co...

As I was in Coimbatore and had some free time, I decided to explore a bit around Pollachi. Of many things, Pollachi is famous for its coconuts. Most tender coconuts sold in Chennai and other cities in TN are often sourced from Pollachi (of course there will be a little local supply). Thus we can call Pollachi the Coconut capital of Tamil Nadu. When in Pollachi, I had great time riding around, particularly in between large coconut plantations. I didn’t do any great deal of research or something else- only rode around on a bike taking lots of pictures. This post shares some photos of coconut plantations along with some relevant information related to coconuts.Pollachi tender coconuts are pop...
