When you plan a visit to South India, especially Tamil Nadu, you cannot miss the temples that showcase the culture and history of the region. The architecture of these historic temples speaks volumes about the ancient history of India. And one such temple town of Tamil Nadu is Chidambaram that is located at a distance of 60 KM approximately from Pondicherry and 210 KM approx., from Chennai. Surrounded by many other temples aka temple cities, you can plan a pilgrimage tour covering the temples at Chidambaram, Karaikal and Kumbakonam. And getting back to my one day trip to Chidambaram, the temples we visited were Thillai Nataraja Temple, Thillai Kali Amman Temple and Gangaikonda Cholapuram. Th...

The city of dosa, mesmerizing palace and rich heritage is how I see Mysore. Though there are direct trains and flights to reach the palace city, I have been planning on a road trip and Dasara was one time I wanted to visit the city to experience the city’s euphoria. When we checked the maps there were two routes that would take us to Mysore and we decided to take the route via Bangalore that is approximately 425 KM from Pondicherry. This route takes you through NH77, NH48 and NH275 i.e., via Tiruvannamalai - Krishnagiri - Hosur - Bengaluru to Mysore. The route through the national highway that connects Gingee - Tiruvannamalai to Mumbai highway (NH48) and the Mysore Road (NH275) are such be...

Spending time with birds is something we love the most. While planning a trip to Mysore, we started our itinerary with Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary because that’s a must visit place for nature enthusiasts. The bird sanctuary is located at a distance of 19 KM from Mysore and 5 KM from Srirangapatna. The place was declared as a protected area by the then Mysore Maharaja after the request by ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali. Resting on the banks of river Cauvery, the place serves as an ideal nesting ground for some beautiful birds. The sanctuary timings are 9 AM - 5 PM every day and there is an entry fee of Rs.60 INR per person along with parking fee of Rs.30 INR. And one major reason that attract...

The crazy roads surrounded with bamboo, trees and coffee plantation entices your drive to Yercaud. At a distance of 31 KM from Salem (Tamil Nadu), Yercaud is located in the Shevaroy hills in the Eastern Ghats. Mystic weather, mesmerizing green cover and attractive tourist spots make this place an ideal vacation spot. As our two-day road trip to Yelagiriwas cut short to a day, we decided to pack our bags and drove to Yercaud. From Yelagiri, it was approximately 140 KM drive and we took the Salem-Tirupattur-Vaniyambadi Road i.e., SH 18. The nearest railway station is at Salem and the nearest airport is at Coimbatore; from Salem or Coimbatore you can hire a cab or take a bus to Yercaud. Here’...

A serene hill station of Tamil Nadu that is located amidst the green cover is Yelagiri. With 14 hairpin bends and well-laid roads, this place is perfect for road trips. As you drive to the hilltop, don’t forget to click a few pictures as well as witness the misty mountains and ever beautiful green cover. A lot of information is available online to help you plan a trip to Yelagiri but after my trip, I realised that most of the information was not up-to-date. So the first thing to do is book a hotel for your stay there, a few days before your trip. The room tariffs differ for weekdays, weekends and holidays based on the demand. Room Stay Review: We booked a room at Yelagiri Residency for Rs....

The one foreign dish that won hearts and tummies in a short span of time would be ‘pizza’. The soft dough, delightful cheesiness and flavorful toppings were enough to make me happy and fill my tummy. There are numerous pizza joints blossoming at every nook-and-corner of any city; the MNC food companies that deliver pizza have already made a lasting impression and it’s hard to compete with them. With so many different varieties and methods to do pizza, we never run out of options. And some of the best pizza destinations in South India can be found at Pondicherry aka Puducherry. The smell of the slightly charred wood-fired pizza that looks, smells and tastes unbelievably good invites you...

Diverse culture, mesmerizing beaches, majestic heritage structures and adorable nature sums up Goa to me. When I talk about Goan culture, it isn't fixated to European or Western culture. The cultural fest of indigenous tribal people is a retreat to your vision, which is mesmerizing than the usual western-style Carnival. Maybe we can see about that in the coming articles, but this piece is more into nature. What else you can imagine from an ardent nature enthusiast?Goa falls along the majestic Western Ghats range. As the rising green mountains please your eyes, the scent of spices rejuvenates your senses. The chirping birds, picturesque landscape, rich ecosystem and the never ending list make...

Where: Va Pho - Asian CanteenAddress: 73, Cathedral Road, Gopalapuram, ChennaiCuisine: AsianAfter every Friday, there comes a weekend that needs some planning to be done. When you talk about a weekend plan within the city, it got to include a movie and food date. And when I was hunting for my food date, there came a suggestion for some food and fun at the new baby in town “Va Pho”. Even before an official launch, they had opened their gates for dining and my Sunday was made blissful after the food. And the love for Asian food is definitely one reason I happened to visit the place; mastering the pan-Asian cuisine isn’t easy but the menu was interesting. Somethings are good only when we experience them and one such place is ‘Dialogue in the Dark’. I might use fancy words to articulate my walk in the dark but you got to experience it yourself to understand what I mean. Almost a year and a half before I did make a visit to their ‘Walk through Experience’, there were positives but somehow I didn’t completely enjoy the experience. And I had lots of cons that I expressed to the staff there; among my concerns one of the major one was ‘travelling with anonymous people or anyone who doesn’t respect the darkness and silence’. During my first walk through experience or Exhibition Tour (as they call it), the unbearable noise pollution i...

Snacks are a major part in my daily food routine; I could even skip a meal but a piece of fruit, crispy fryums, bajji, vada or any munchies complete the day for me. But most of the munchies I prefer help me gain some extra fat and they are unhealthy or fried food. Though unhealthy directly equates to tasty food, I wouldn’t prefer them every other day. So when there is an option to opt for tasty plus healthy food I definitely wish to try. And one such online portal that curates and sells an array of snacks which would be a healthier substitute.Snack Experts have a good collection of snacks and we can pick our choice of munchies based on taste or diet plan. It was a hot sunny day. A fruit seller was selling mangoes standing across one of the busy urban stretches flanking Loyola College, Chennai’s oldest and most prestigious college. Mangoes were lined up neatly over the platform; the fleshy and juicy fruits occupied the front row pushing aside the pale and skinny ones. He sprinkled some water over the fruits, which glistened in the morning. Pencil Sketch - ChinnasTwo brightest fruits named Alphonse and Rumanish, placed at the front row, started their conversation.“Oh God! This sun is killing me,” said Alphonse with a weary look.“Come on man, cheer up.” Rumanish replied trying to cheer him up.“Its 110 degree and you want me to c...

As we rinsed our hands, the curvy glass jars with Thej made its way. Thej is the most-relished drink of the Ethiopian land, which consists of honey, sugar and water and fermented to r...

An old man was watching television. He slowly moved forward and came to the edge of the seat. His eyes widened and his brows went up. He looked worried and disturbed by something he saw on the television. Wiping down his sweat from his forehead, he looked at a set of motorbikes set ablaze followed by a horrific scene where a police station was on fire. Distressed, he swapped the channel and saw the same scene but from a different angle.Pencil Sketch - ChinnasThe same set of scenes was shown across all news channels, especially in the local channels, without any break. The shots and angles differed but not the scene. What was more agonizing for the old man was that even ‘music’ and ‘mov...

Though the cuisine presents some impeccable vegetarian dishes, you are drawn towards the meat looking at their style and perfection in cooking the meat. I believe Chinese and Thai are two cuisines that make the complete use of vegetables in their food. Even though restaurants promise to take utmost care while cooking a vegetarian and non-vegetarian dish separately, I do not buy that promise. So it’s ideal to have a vegetarian exclusive restaurant for each cuisine; and when you start about Chinese...
