My son keeps telling me "no one keeps whining about their problems like you do". Not the least this famous doctor and human rights activist  Dr Hawa Abdi. Dr. Hawa Abdi is physician from Somalia. The same Somalia which is famous for its pirates, it drought and complete failure of state. UN has declared it as the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet. When  international aid groups have pulled out of this country for safety concerns, this lady runs a 400 bed hospital, a school and a shelter for refugees. Born in 1947, she was studied Medicine in Moscow with scholarship. Then she pursued her studies in law. Her grandmother convinced her to use her knowledge to help her people. ...

We can preach all we want and argue and shout and all that. At the safe haven of our homes and offices. That will do a little to help the women who are in crisis. Whether it is domestic violence or eve teasing or exploitation at work place. But what can we really do to stop such violence. If you see any eve teasing or harassing on the street, or bus or train immediately go to the help of girl/woman being teased. It does not matter whether you know that girl or not, what caste/community/language she is from. Today it is her, tomorrow it will be your daughter. If you hear  a woman being abused in the neighborhood either by her husband or in-laws try to mediate. You may be snubbed by the perp...

I am officially on a diet. But my diet is unique just like everything else about me - some say weird about me. All these days, though I was telling everyone that I am fat, I told myself that I am slightly on heavier side, but not fat. And I wanted and hence believed it. But the  illusion was shattered in a family function last month. In this function, many of common friends of me and my husband had come. A few said openly that your spouse looks same as he looked 30 years ago, but you have certainly put on weight. Of course, I tried telling myself that, being women they are jealous of me. But the inner me would not listen and told "dear lady, you are very fat and you need to do somethi...

Many of the parents who come to admit their children in RTE, come in expensive cars. One child who got admitted in RTE category is the son of a owner whose tenant's son is studying in the same school in general category. This poor kid's "poor" dad also has few more buildings given out to rent and also some shops. RTE - right to education was a law introduced recently allows poor children to study in good schools. The fees and other expenses of the child will be borne by government. Many schools had opposed the move. Now look at the way people are tweaking the law to their benefit. They pay some bribe and get an income certificate with annual income as low as Rs 15000/- per year and get thei...

I was surprised to hear a leader of certain party tell the news anchor that Hindus will not support Modi if he does not work on issues like uniform civil code, ram janmabhoomi etc. Once upon a time there used to be a certain religious leader in Delhi who would dictate his people to vote for such and such party. Well I have heard it that way. Is this leader in similar role? Is he the spokesperson of Hindus? What is his definition of Hindu? I think I am Hindu. I remember filling in my religion as Hindu in some forms in school and college times. And in our not very small house, we have a tiny room where we have kept idols of Hindu gods. And, in the middle of night, if I am scared or I just can...

Part II is just says no part II. The initial book was good. But now it is more about Islam. I can understand and relate with personal turmoil. But religious turmoil and more importantly religious affinity? NO. So bye bye Mr Moghul. I would rather watch GA episode 256th time. But why such contradicting two posts? i> I wanted a blog post very badly. ii> Impatience. So the bottom line is,  if you are a confused atheist like me, it is not the book for you.  In the mean while I am re-re-re-redesigning icons for my app. I, who can not draw anything on paper, am even worse with mouse (what is this thing which substitutes mouse on lap top  called). And when  I take too many days for somet...

I know two women by the name Rekha. Rekha in Sanskrit means line. And both these women are so thin, they can compete with these size 0 models. Now I remember I had a class mate by the same name and she was also very thin. So if they are Rekhas, then my name should be vratta. Vratta in Sanskrit means Circle. ...

Haroon Moghul's this book is quite interesting. Some how we can relate to the books by authors of Pakistan and we feel some how they are us. The protagonist is a Pakistani studying Arabic in Egypt. He is brought of in conservative Muslim family. And of course that makes him guilty for not wanting do namaaz every day. Why did our parents bring us up as a bag of guilt. So much so that, as child I used to say, just like everyone else in my class, "today I am laughing so much. Tomorrow, I will cry". As if it is a sin even to laugh. Anyways he with his room mate, goes to friday prayers to Masjid and realizes that there are so many others who are also only physically present there and some are ev...

I was trying really hard to improve the appearance and usability of my kannada keyboard. I tried using 3 screens instead of 2. Then I tried popup screen for diacritics (aakara, ikara etc). I tried different background. I tried looking into some source code to see if I can change background of special characters. Yesterday I was in for a shock. I realized many phones like non-samsung phones will not render the language properly. If I type shabda, they will display ಶಬ್ ದ . And if I type, shale, they display ಶ ಾ ಲ ೆ Such a disappointment. Here I was dreaming about buying a car by placing this app as paid app. I could hardly buy a jatre car with this situation. Then something in...

What is your reaction when you read a newspaper article about an auto driver returning bag full of money left back in his auto to its owner? Yeah, even I thought ' too good to be true'. But I experienced a similar situation yesterday. I was wearing a gold bracelet with a small dangling pendant. Was soaking the clothes for the maid, dumping all the dirty vessels in a bowl and giving it to maid and so on. I did not realize when that dangling pendant fell and where. Me with long sight and very careless ways would not have realized it missing for months together. Maid who was washing the clothes called me and showed the pendant, saying it had fallen from the bucket to ground. I was dumb stuck a...

Image courtesy : The Hindu Arunima Sinha is the first Indian amputee to climb the tallest peak, Mt. Everest. 25 year old Ms. Sinha has a prosthetic left leg. Arunima lost her left leg 2 years ago, in April 11 2011 when some criminals pushed her out of a moving train. They had tried to snatch her chain, and when she resisted, they pushed her out of the train. She was hit by a passing train and seriously injured. Doctors had to cut her left leg below the knee. As she did not want the pity of all people, she decided to achieve something. She joined Tata Steel Adventure Foundation Camp and trained herself for climbing the tallest mountain in the world. Kudos, Ms. Sinha, we salute you!!! ...

Have you observed something? Most of my blogs are about mundane things about myself or sarcasm about others. And I am not alone in this. Why do we always like to blog about drawbacks of others. Do we never find anything good about anyone blogworthy? And if some one happens to write a post praising X or Y or Z, we call them their agents. I have blogged many things about marriage ceremonies and of course it is full of sarcasm. But why did I not mention, how much work it takes to arrange such a marriage. And I am not even talking about  bride/groom hunting.  Four, five hundreds will attend the marriage. Breakfast for those who come early, special lunch and tea and snacks for all should be a...

Circumstances are making me more and more convinced that our rulers are not what we think them to be. They do think of ingenious ways to improve our health. When you are walking or driving on the what is supposed to be road or trying to do either what do you say. No, I don't mean expletives. You say "yahan khuda hai, vahan khuda hai, aage khuda hai, peeche khuda hai. sabhi jagah khuda hai" and by saying it again and again, saying it everyday you will turn into a devout hindu/muslim/christian or whatever other religion you belong to. And that has plus points too. You will get peace of mind. (Never mind the fact that you transfer all your worries big and small to uperwallah. And he cann't ta...

Do you love shopping? No! Do you at least love window shopping? No!! I do not believe you. All ladies from 8 to 80 love shopping. And they enjoy window shopping. But of late you find it too stressful to travel to the malls in this maddening traffic. Did you say you are waiting for better roads, since the government has changed in your city? Are you so gullible? Anyway I was finding it too difficult to maneuver the herculean task of driving in this killing traffic. And I was concluding that  my days of oogling and drooling over the newest dresses and books and furniture was over. But that was not to be. As usual the God Computer and God Internet came to my rescue. Now I window shop for hour...

Noel Burun is a synesthete. He never forgets anything. He memorizes things with colors and images. He can remember entire books like works of Byron or Arabian Nights. When he meets people his mind is flooded with words and images. His mother Stella can not remember where she is or which year it is. She keeps asking when will the train arrive. She is suffering from Alzeimer's disease. She comes to her son's room  with a very bright light in the middle of night and keeps observing him. Noel has to take care of her like a child. He tells her stories and poems to her in the night. He need not read them, as he remembers all. Noel works in his lab in the basement trying to find a cure to...

Let us just remember what names will these people call each other for providing entertainment to the public. And let us remind these names   when they form an un-holy alliance to form the government. Some more entertaining news in this front areElection commission officials caught former UP chief minister Mayawati carrying 1 lakh rupees as she landed in Gulbarga. But she asked whether they would have checked Sonia Gandhi or Sushma Swaraj. They are of course discriminating against a dalit. Of course, the oppressed classes need reservation and concession in everything. In Karwar, the ever canny candidates sent Biryani, gift wrapped, to the houses instead of money. Smart move!Modi says that 2...
