Our second day in Jodhpur started quite early. Though we had not planned to do too much of sightseeing today, there was still a lot to do and Ekta wanted some hours spared specifically for shopping. So after a hectic breakfast, we were up and out on the streets again. There were an auto rickshaw [...]The post Colorful Rajasthan: Jodhpur – Umaid Bhawan Palace appeared first on Shadows Galore....

A series of photographs taken by me, Ekta and my sister during the course of last two months, from the balcony of our flat. No DSLRs were harmed in the making of these photographs and they were entirely taken using a simple Point and Shoot camera. After a day long journey through the ravines of Aravalis and the increasingly arid plains we reached Jodhpur on the evening of 21st February ’13. We had booked a room in the Shivam Guest House near the Ghantaghar Market (Clock Tower Market) of old Jodhpur and were quite happy with our choice.  Through the narrow lanes [...]The post Colorful Rajasthan: Jodhpur- The Blue City appeared first on Shadows Galore....

While it is not the most popular amongst tourists as neighbouring Mallorca or Ibiza, it is still the second largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. Many tourists who come to Menorca consider it to be a more peaceful and natural getaway than some of the other islands. This makes Menorca a great destination for those going [...]The post Soak up all Menorca Has to Offer and More appeared first on Shadows Galore....

We left Melbourne around 9:30 am on a slightly overcast but still hot and beautiful summer’s day. I was lucky enough to meet a really nice Scottish guy who also had a car and had offered to drive us along the Great Ocean Road to see the Twelve Apostles. There were two other guys with us, an Irish guy and a German guy.For those of you haven’t heard of this road it was built by the soldiers who returned from World War 1 and stretches for 150 miles along the coast making it the world’s largest war memorial. Here is part of the road as it hugs the coast line.Along the Great Ocean RoadOur first stop was the lovely Bells Beach which is where many surfing competitions are held. However not to...

It came as a surprise when we were invited to the First anniversary celebrations at Punjab Grill. The Gourmet restaurant is located in the Phoenix Market City in the Viman Nagar area of the city and is a stylish one from its looks. We had seen this place on earlier occasions while shopping in the mall but for some reasons or another, did not try it out. So it definitely seemed like an interesting proposition; the surprise part being us, who are just simple traveling folks, getting an invite. So on the evening of 17th May, I finished my work fast, picked Ekta from home and we reached the mall after navigating through a difficult traffic of Friday evening. Though the event was to start at 7...

After Kumbhalgarh, we started for our next destination which was the famous Ranakpur Jain Temple. This small village is in the Pali District of Rajasthan, around 20 KM from Kumbhalgarh, however the journey is on serpentine roads on the ghats of Aravali, which although scenic, is a little time-consuming. I think it took us around a couple of hours to reach there but we did not complain as the view of the Aravalis and countryside in Rajasthan was truly good.Dedicated to Lord Adinath, the Ranakpur temple is one of the most famous Jain temples in India. Built of white marble, it is also one of the most spectacular and stands in the league of the famous Dilwara temples of Abu. The temple was cons...

I had taken this photograph at our impromptu visit to the Sadras fort during our college days. This was a tombstone on one of the graves, complete with a Coat of Arms, perhaps of the family the unfortunate soul belonged too. Since the engraving was in Dutch  could not understand any of it except that it was from 1702, from the times when the Dutch East India Company was still active in this part of India. Uploaded this photograph on Flickr and forgot all about it, till a few days back. This was what Alex van ‘t Hoff from Hollad commented on the photograph:“Hier onder legt en rust Johannes de Gast. Today I and Ekta decided to visit TJ’s Brew Works, in Amanora. The experience moved us so much that I have been forced to write a review of the place, something which I always reserve for the special ones.TJ’s Brew Works is a microbrewary in the East Block of Amanora Town Center, Hadapsar Pune. It happens to be the second microbrewary in the town after the famous Doolaly but is much more accessible than the former. Being inside a mall, a visit to this place can be coupled with a lot of other activities. So after spending sometime in the mall as we usually do, we arrived at TJ’s on the time for which we had booked our table and were promptly shown inside.AmbienceThe ambience of the plac...

Meeting fellow bloggers is always a pleasure, as one is always happy to meet more of one’s own kind. So when we got an invitation from Farrukh for the Bloggers’ Evening at Terttulia, there was no missing it. As expected, it turned out to be a good evening where we met some blogger friends, old and new.Terttulia is a Catalan word which means a friendly get together. This place is located on the South Main Road, Koregaon Park. Reaching the place is straight forward but first timers like us could surely get confused without a bigger sign board. This Tapas bar is a unique place to hang-out with different seating styles. In terms of ambiance  it almost gets everything right and I agree ...

Some more striking aspects of life in rural Rajasthan which we were able to notice were easy smile on the faces of people and the importance of music in their culture. While we were on our visit to the beautiful Jain temple at Lodurva near Jaisalmer, this singer was sitting there outside the gates singing, “Kesariya Balam, aao re .. padhaaro maare des …” in his rich sonorous voice. It was his infectious inviting smile that got us and we sat there for sometime to listen to him. Other than us, his goat was the only audience present there..The post The Singer and the Goat appeared first on Shadows Galore....

It was another beautiful morning in Udaipur and I saw the sun rising after a very long time. It was a gorgeous sight and we spent a couple of hours doing nothing but ogling at the beauty of Udaipur from our window. However, we had to leave the city today and go towards Jodhpur, via Kumbhalgarh. Being a full day journey, it was necessary that we started early. So after a quick breakfast, we packed our bags and bid adieu to Udaipur.Jodhpur is a little more than 250 km from Udaipur and according to google, the journey can be covered in 4 hours and 15 minutes. However, there is no direct train route between the two cities and one needs to go all the way back to Ajmer to catch a train to Jodhpur....

After having a grueling session of Counter-Strike, four of us went for some snacks nearby. Cursing ourselves for not able to organize a single tour in our 4 years of engineering, we were very determined to correct the statement. Within moments we decided to visit the pride of Gujarat, Asiatic Lions of Sasan Gir. We decided to leave by 8 in the morning but we left at 11 courtesy Harnish Doshi. We reached Gir at 3 after a lunch at Junagadh. Searched and compromised on a low-cost hotel courtesy Vasu Ukani. We visited Devaliya wildlife sanctuary, which is an enclosed area of around 20+ sq. km where they make you travel by bus, and you can see a glimpse of what is inside the Gir forest. At Deval...

While some blogger may not agree with me when I say that bloggers have their own share of vanity. I still insist on this theory getting acceptance that blogging is one of the many manifestations of our basic desires to be great, to live forever and find general acceptance. These desires, especially the last one get satiated by public praise. When we started Shadows Galore, though we will continue to vehemently deny it, some of those ‘desires’ must have been at work. It becomes very obvious when we get filled with delight when others appreciate our work. What started with small notes on our comment box like “great post!”, and better rankings on Indiblogger has now come to people listin...

From the ‘Town of baked beans’ to the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore or Bengaluru, as it is called now, has come a long way. What once used to be referred as a pensioners’ paradise has now become the heart of the booming IT industry of India. Not only has the city expanded at an furious pace in the last couple of decades, but it has also become one of the most cosmopolitan and forward looking cities in India with one of the best urban infrastructures. While a part of the city still reminds of its tranquil colonial past,  a major part seems adamant to being considered no less than a Metropolis.ReachBengaluru International Airport, located at Devanhalli is one of the busiest airpo...

Our biggest regret with regards to Udaipur was that we had just one day in this magnificent city. This beautiful erstwhile capital of Mewar deserves much more than that. However, am hopeful to see more of Udaipur when I make a trip to Chittor some time later. It was early morning when we arrived in Udaipur. We had booked a Guest House on the lakeside and it was a pleasant surprise to find that it was a 200 years old Haveli of some Thakur (noble) of Mewar in the old city, overlooking the lake. The window of our seemingly ancient room opened in the lake and exactly, in front of it was the Hanuman Ghat. The window  was quipped with a raised platform on which the Guest House folks had very thoug...

Maybe you’ve been a budget traveler/ backpacker before during your college years, and you want to go again but can’t stomach the thought of staying in a hostel. Or maybe you’ve never been backpacking but like the thought of the flexibility and adventure it can bring.Either way, you’re looking for a bit more of a luxurious experience than your typical staying-in-hostels, eating-street-vendor-food, and traveling-on-the-cheap backpacking vacation style. The good news is that even if you’re operating on a pretty tight budget, you can make this happen. Here’s how:Pick the right destinationHere’s the deal: you simply can’t backpack around the world on a dime without giving up most ...

Goa is the smallest of the states in India and is yet one of the most famous tourist destinations in the country. The natural beauty, lovely beaches and the unique culture of Goa makes it very popular among tourists. There are two districts in Goa, the North and South Goa. While the North is famous for bursting towns, iconic beaches and a vibrant night life, South Goa is remarkable for its scenic beauty and sea beach yet unspoiled by too much of commercialization. Spending a quiet evening on the uncluttered beaches, taking a sneak peak in the Konkan life in the villages or simply riding through the lush greenery of the region are some activities one can look forward to.ReachThe major citie...
